Ford’s F-150 SVT Raptor fits in well at the 2009 SEMA show, being as it is, in essence, Ford’s in-house aftermarket showcase. Introduced at the 2008 show, the Raptor debuts a pair of even fiercer metamorphoses at this year’s shindig.
While the hullabaloo at the Raptor’s introduction was all about the truck’s impressive suspension and the off-road capability it enables—particularly at higher speeds—the fact that the ancient 5.4-liter V-8’s 310 hp hardly enable high-speed cruising on any terrain was painfully apparent. Surely another 101 hp and 69 lb-ft of torque would help things along.
The Boss in a Raptor. Could We Get that Airbrushed on the Sides? At long last, Ford’s new “Boss” 6.2-liter V-8 will debut at the 2009 SEMA show under the hood of the Raptor. Making 411 hp and 434 lb-ft of torque in this application, it marks the triumphant return of the dormant “most powerful half-ton pickup” rally cry, a chant that holds the potential of bringing pickup owners to their knees, blubbering tears of joy. Ford also says it will cleave 1.5 seconds from the Raptor’s 0-to-60-mph time, so figure on somewhere in the mid-six-second range.
Best of all, the tremendous accelerative edge the 6.2-liter promises comes at a price that, when considering the truck’s $38,995 base price, seems reasonable. At $3000, it will nudge the price to $41,995. Orders for trucks with the new engine will commence December 1, with deliveries to begin in early 2010.
