The new Volvo V40 is set to be unveiled at next week's
Geneva motor show.

On sale from next June, the new 208 takes over duties from the much maligned 207 - and is further proof that the French carmaker is keen on continuing the fine design form kickstarted by the RCZ coupe. The door indents, the boomerang rear lights, the swoopy roofline, the sportier dimensions...

Engine choices come from a pair of three-cylinder petrol engines producing 68bhp and 84bhp, or two diesel units that both emit less than 99g/km of CO2. The whole package is a whopping 110kg lighter than the outgoing 207.

Mazda will hit the Japanese market with a new RX-8 Spirit R special edition. The vehicle will be limited in series of just 1000 units as production ends in June 2012.

Late last year, we reported on the delivery of the Citroen Berlingo electric vans to the French postal service. Did you know that an electric version of the Citroen Berlingo First existed ten years ago? It sure did, but was unfortunately discontinued in 2002 due to poor sales. In 2007, La Poste, France's postal service, announced its intent to purchase quite a few electric vehicles. Venturi, known for the Fetish, an electric sports car, answered the call. Rather than designing an entirely new vehicle, Venturi decided to once again convert the Citroen Berlingo to an EV.
In a process that works a bit like the Ford Transit Connect Electric (also used by the Norwegian post office) Citroen ships the vehicle, sans engine, to the Venturi factory where the electric powertrain is installed. The new reincarnation of the Berlingo EV is completely different from its predecessor. A very interesting part of the new iteration is its non-lithium ion Zebra battery which is cheap, can keep its charge for a very long time and is non-toxic. That's right, non-toxic because its electrolyte is liquefied salt. The downside is that it runs very hot – like 500°F hot.
With a price tag of about $67,000, it's doubtful that private citizens will be clamoring for these vehicles. Also, the EV Berlingo gets about a 75-mile range, which is not that impressive, but enough for its target audience: fleets. Aside from La Poste, a car-sharing service in Nice will also be employing the all-electric vans in their fleet.

Redesigned vehicles, especially
small cars, helped drive sales gains for the auto industry in April, as consumers shifted gears in the face of rising gasoline prices.
U.S. vehicle sales totaled 1.15 million units in April, up 18 percent from April 2010. For the year to date, sales of 4.12 million units is up 20 percent.
But April could be as good as it gets. Gas prices show no sign of holding steady or declining, and traditionally rise with the arrival of the summer driving season.
Also, most automakers--and Japanese automakers in particular--face continuing product shortages as parts makers cope with factories damaged by the Japanese earthquake in early March.
The slow recovery is forcing Japanese automakers to idle their assembly lines or run them at slower speed. Dealers are prevented from ordering some colors, and many Japanese-brand dealers face limits on ordering cars for several months to come.
Ford Motor Co., which posted a 16-percent gain for April, said the Fiesta and Focus sold well, as did the redesigned Explorer, which uses more fuel-efficient V6 engines.
Also, 50 percent of the Ford F-150s sold in April were equipped with a V6, instead of the Image by iambents via Flickrtraditional V8.
Ford Motor sales totaled 189,778 vehicles in April.
General Motors recorded a 27-percent sales gain in April, including a 50-percent jump in demand for cars, including the new Chevrolet Cruze. Other big sellers were the Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain crossovers.
GM said its April sales totaled 232,538 vehicles. It noted that retail sales are up 35 percent so far this year.
And in the pony-car battle, the Chevy Camaro continues to outpace the Ford Mustang. Chevy sold 10,852 Camaros in April, up 18.6 percent from a year ago, while Ford sold 8,180 Mustangs, up 59 percent. For the year to date, the Camaro leads the Mustang, 30,824 to 23,599.
The Chrysler group, on the other hand, saw strong sales for its trucks and SUVs, in spite of higher fuel costs. It noted that Jeep sales rose 65 percent in April, with the redesigned 2011 Compass and Grand Cherokee among the best sellers. But it also lacks a competitor in the small-car segment. Copies of the Fiat 500 are still just trickling into dealerships.
Overall, sales were up 22 percent, to 117,225 vehicles for the Chrysler group in April, compared with the same month a year ago. Year-to-date sales are up 23 percent, to 404,175 units sold.
Among the Japanese automakers:
-- Nissan said combined sales of Nissan and Infiniti vehicles rose 12 percent in April. Nissan sold 8,432 copies of the Rogue, up 28.1 percent from last year. Sentra sales increased 42.2 percent, with 9,367 copies sold.
-- Combined Honda and Acura sales were up 10 percent for the month. It notched a 66-percent jump in sales of the Fit small car, and a 3-percent gain in Civic sales.
-- Sales of Toyota, Scion and Lexus vehicles rose a combined 1 percent in April. Toyota saw sales gains for the Toyota Camry and Scion xB, as well as the Toyota Highlander and Sienna people carriers.
Among the European automakers:
-- BMW posted a 20-percent gain in April. Mini's April sales of 6,446 units were up 67.7 percent from a year ago. That included 1,709 units of the Countryman crossover.
-- The Volkswagen group, which includes Audi, boosted sales 20 percent in April. Audi posted its best-ever April sales, and VW notched double-digit gains in every model line except the New Image via WikipediaBeetle and Eos.

Apparently Elfalan wasn’t the only one hassling Audi. In just one month, more than 11,500 enthusiasts expressed interest in the TT RS via a survey on Audi’s Facebook page. That, along with the aforementioned positive reviews from U.S. media outlets, served up a no-brainer decision for Audi.

Ford’s F-150 SVT Raptor fits in well at the 2009 SEMA show, being as it is, in essence, Ford’s in-house aftermarket showcase. Introduced at the 2008 show, the Raptor debuts a pair of even fiercer metamorphoses at this year’s shindig.
While the hullabaloo at the Raptor’s introduction was all about the truck’s impressive suspension and the off-road capability it enables—particularly at higher speeds—the fact that the ancient 5.4-liter V-8’s 310 hp hardly enable high-speed cruising on any terrain was painfully apparent. Surely another 101 hp and 69 lb-ft of torque would help things along.
The Boss in a Raptor. Could We Get that Airbrushed on the Sides? At long last, Ford’s new “Boss” 6.2-liter V-8 will debut at the 2009 SEMA show under the hood of the Raptor. Making 411 hp and 434 lb-ft of torque in this application, it marks the triumphant return of the dormant “most powerful half-ton pickup” rally cry, a chant that holds the potential of bringing pickup owners to their knees, blubbering tears of joy. Ford also says it will cleave 1.5 seconds from the Raptor’s 0-to-60-mph time, so figure on somewhere in the mid-six-second range.
Best of all, the tremendous accelerative edge the 6.2-liter promises comes at a price that, when considering the truck’s $38,995 base price, seems reasonable. Found on Bring A Trailer, this 2001 Ford Focus may be the ultimate in stealthy speed. From the outside, it looks like any other 2001 Focus, although the front suspension rides a little high. Roll up next to someone at a light, and my guess is that they’d be looking around for the sound of that V8 rumble; they’d never guess it’s emanating from beneath the Focus’ hood.Someone went to a lot of effort to build this car, currently for sale on eBay. They began with an FWD to RWD conversion, before shoehorning in a 5.0 liter Ford Racing crate motor, good for about 360 horsepower. The stock tranny wouldn’t last more than a single shift, so a Tremec 5 speed was made to fit and delivers the power to the wheels through an 8.8 inch Ford Racing TracLock rear end. I’ve got no idea what size tires are on the rear, but they’re nowhere close to big enough. This car must do hellacious, end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it style burnouts.

The builder went to great lengths to keep the appearance as stock as possible. The fenders are stock, and not even flared, which severely restricts tire and wheel width. The custom exhaust features a single 3” outlet to make the car look more docile, but the whole Q-Ship ruse is foiled by the giant Ford Racing tach (complete with shift light) on the dash. I’d have installed a regular tach in the instrument cluster, with a simple shift light hidden somewhere in the dash.

A descendent of another American SUV favorite, the Jimmy, the GMC Yukon has been a mainstay in the world of full-size vehicles for almost 20 years. Originally based off of the GMT400 platform, the first-generation GMC Yukon utilized a truck chassis and in 1994, switched from being offered strictly as a 2-door to adding a 4-door model to the roster. Consequently, the 4-door Yukon weighed in about a half-ton more than the 2-door model. A 5.7L small-block V8 was the standard engine included but a 6.5L turbocharged V8 became available in 1994, as well. In 2000, the Yukon and the Tahoe (both are closely related) were redesigned and moved to the GMT800 platform, at the time the most recent platform for GM's full-size trucks. Smaller yet more powerful engines were introduced to replace the standard 5.7L from the first series, including a 5.3L Vortec V8 capable of topping out at 285 horsepower.
The second-generation Yukon also offImage via Wikipediaered an automatic transmission only and showcased some exterior changes, as well. The outline of the body was now more aerodynamically friendly and the grille was improved for a bolder image. Inside the Yukon, upgraded seats, improved door panels, and a new dash were introduced. When 2003 arrived, the Yukon began to take on even more changes. StabiliTrak, GM's stability control system, arrived. Other amenities such as satellite radio and a DVD entertainment system were also offered. In 2004, the engine options were updated with GMC still leaning on smaller yet more efficient motors. A 4.8L Vortec was introduced that displayed the same horsepower as the original 5.3L (285). A new 5.3L Vortec became available and was rated for 295 HP.
Redesigned for the GMT900 platform, the third-generation GMC Yukon debuted in 2007. The front of the exterior featured a substantial number of changes. A smoother, curvier hood, new fascia, and larger grille highlight the restyling cues. New seats, real wood trim on the dash, chrome accents, and improved door panels make up the notable updates for the interior. Let's break out the old automotive etymology textbook for a fun and fascinating exposé on the Toyota MR2 Spyder. The 1,345-word biography of Kiichiro Toyoda and his company's origins in making electric looms has been removed for reasons of brevity. The middle bit regarding the car's name is more conveniently straight to the point, referring to the fact that it's a Midengine, Rear-drive, 2-seat sports car.

The Spyder part of the name has nothing to do with arachnids, and is instead a common alternate word for a convertible sports car. Ferrari and Fiat have used the more conventionally spelled Spider name in the past and Toyota clearly wanted to tap into this high pedigree of sporting vehicles for its new-for-2000 roadster. As the old saying goes, the name says it all. except in French etymology, which reveals that "MR2" pronounced phonetically en francais sounds like the word for…excrement. Therefore, Toyota called this car simply "MR" in France. In the English-speaking world, it was nicknamed "Mister Two." Ah, isn't etymology fun? Past MR2s were offered with T-top roofs, but the Spyder served as Toyota's first real attempt to take on the Mazda Miata's monopoly in the low-priced roadster segment. Featuring a 1.8-liter four-cylinder mounted directly behind the driver, and a low curb weight, the MR2 succeeded as a fun-to-drive drop top.

But in the all-important cute category, it missed the grade. It had the profile of a squared-off Boxster, the face of a frog and a tail that resembled a Pokemon (especially when painted yellow). Also, the interior looked extremely dated before it was even introduced and its trunk made the Miata's look like a B-52's bomb bay. Although it was initially a hot commodity, the Toyota MR2 Spyder was a low-volume niche vehicle like its predecessors until the ax fell on it in 2005.
